Reliable live television, start to finish

FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most often from broadcasters and producers planning a new or upgraded live studio.

Questions before a project begins

These answers cover how we work, what we need from you and what to expect from first enquiry to handover. If yours is missing, write to us through the contact page.

What kinds of studios do you work on?

We work on news studios, interview sets and live show stages, from a single-room regional studio to a larger space with a separate gallery. Most clients are broadcasters, regional news teams and event producers. We start by understanding the programmes you make, then plan the technical side around them.

Can you upgrade an existing studio rather than build a new one?

Yes. Many of our projects improve a studio that already runs. We survey what is installed, keep equipment that still does its job, and replace or rewire only what limits reliability or picture quality. Where possible we plan the work around your broadcast schedule so you stay on air.

Do you supply the equipment or only design the system?

We specify the equipment, wire it, test it and support it. We recommend kit that suits your programmes and budget rather than pushing a single make. The scope is agreed in writing before work starts, so you know exactly what is included and what you arrange yourselves.

How early should we contact you before a launch date?

As early as the date is known. Design, delivery of equipment, installation, testing and rehearsal each take time, and a studio rushed into service tends to show its weak points on air. Tell us your target date and we will say plainly whether it is realistic.

Will our own crew be able to run the studio afterwards?

That is the aim. We offer practical training at the desk, on your own equipment, covering routine operation, camera work and what to do when something fails. Written notes and a clear fallback procedure are left with you at handover so the studio does not depend on us.

Do you support us during live broadcasts?

Yes. We can provide on-site technical support during broadcasts, particularly for first shows after an installation or for larger live events. The level of cover, from a single engineer in the gallery to a fuller team, is agreed beforehand and confirmed in writing.

What information helps you most in a first enquiry?

A short description of the programmes you make, the room you have or plan to use, your approximate budget and your target date. Photographs or a floor plan are useful but not essential. We would rather start with a conversation than a long form.

Where are you based and do you travel?

We are based in Exeter, at 14 Quayside Works, Haven Road, and work with clients across the country. Surveys, installation and on-site support take place at your premises. Travel is discussed and written into the quotation, so there are no surprises later.

How we work

What a typical project involves from start to finish

Every studio is different, but the sequence of a project is familiar. We separate listening, designing and proving the result, so each stage has a clear outcome before the next one begins.

Survey and planning

We begin with a conversation about your programmes, then visit the room to look at its size, power, acoustics and existing equipment. From that we write a proposal that names what will be installed, what will be reused and what we recommend you do not buy. Hannah Whitcombe coordinates the schedule and is your point of contact throughout.

Installation and testing

Equipment is wired, labelled and tested as a complete system, not as separate boxes. Vision mixing, routing, monitoring and intercom are checked together, and lighting and camera positions are set against the real set. We keep notes of every connection so that anyone maintaining the studio later can follow them.

Rehearsal and handover

Before the first broadcast we run rehearsals with your crew, using your real run sheet and the fallback procedures we have agreed. Training happens at the desk on your own equipment. At handover you receive documentation, and we stay available for support if the first live shows raise questions.

Still have a question?

Write through the contact page with a few lines about your programmes and room. We will reply with questions, and if it suits you, arrange a conversation about equipment, cameras, acoustics or lighting.
